Abstract Marine benthic algae provide shelter to a diverse community inhabiting their fronds. They are used as food resource and protection against desiccation and wave impact. Moreover, they can alleviate hydrodynamism, providing better conditions of temperature and salinity. Presence and distribution of animals depend on structure and morphology of the algae and their structural complexity influences the amount of accumulated sediment. This may, affect phytal community composition, which can also vary seasonally according to fluctuations in the cycle of growth and macroalgae decay. Furthermore, the distribution patterns may be affected by the choice of active adults for better microhabitats, resulting on higher survival and reproduction. In this project, we intend to characterize the factors modulating distribution of Tanaidacea in coralline algae habitats. These factors include different degrees of wave exposure, seasonality, and algal biomass, size and degree of selection of the sediment, besides the possible influences of the choice of active tanaids among different microhabitats formed by coralline algae. | |
