Abstract

The taxonomy of Neotropical Cholevinae leiodids experienced a substantial advance in the 1990s, during which methodologies were developed and it was established a rich collection paving the way for the advent of taxonomists interested in the study of Cholevinae. However, the Neotropical fauna of leiodids received little attention in the last decade, reflecting the current shortage of taxonomists devoted to the study of these beetles. As result, the Neotropical species of Cholevinae remains underexplored. This is the case of the genera "Paulipalpina" and "Parapaulipalpina" that includes dozens of undescribed species. The poor taxonomic knowledge of these taxa coupled with morphological homogeneity and small body size makes it difficult to identify the species. This scenario, in addition to obscure the actual diversity of these organisms, discourages the use of these by researchers and restricts the advance of the knowledge of neotropical beetles to groups taxonomically solved. This proposal aims to make a taxonomic revision of "Paulipalpina" and "Parapaulipalpina", and to conduct a cladistic analysis of their species based on morphological characters. This research will describe new species in these genera, expanding the knowledge of Cholevinae diversity and filling the gap of information about the group, especially notable in tropical lands. The development of an identification key associated with images of external morphology, spermatheca and genitalia will democratize the identification of species. With this proposal, it is expected to be trained new Leiodidae taxonomists, consolidating this line of research in the country and so attending one of the suggested guidelines for taxonomy of Coleoptera: the "study of families without specialists in Brazil".
