Abstract

The production of art criticism during the nineteenth century was a common activity to intellectuals who saw in fine art, a fundamental element for the general education of the citizen. In Brazil, several intellectuals published papers facing the art production of their time to find elements on it evidencing the enhancement of the country. Gradually studies recovering the contribution of intellectuals to fine arts have come up. The papers from Araújo Porto-Alegre, Gonzaga Duque, Félix Ferreira and others have become the purpose of essays and thesis. Among Brazilian intellectuals of the late nineteenth century who dedicated themselves to art criticism emerges Arthur Azevedo, whose production has not been adequately examined so far. Its importance to the fine arts in the country becomes relevant when we remember that he, along with art criticism he was also a major Brazilian art collector of the period. We know that rarely a single individual has publicly taken this double position in fine arts circuit. Our hypothesis is that Arthur Azevedo could act as an art critic and a collector because the art circuit of Rio de Janeiro, then in formation, permitted to a single individual to act in both areas. To develop this study, besides visits to the Arthur Azevedo Collection in São Luis do Maranhão, the continuous deep research on newspapers and other periodicals of the time will be held searching for critical papers of such author. It is important to highlight that in my Master dissertation entitled "Collection of Engravings Arthur Azevedo: memory and cultural heritage" held at Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie an initial profile of this collection has firstly established which will be very useful for the doctoral research.
