Abstract

In the present days, many researchs are carried out in the civil construction sector based on the sustainability concepts because concrete is the non-renewable product with more consumption in the world. So, the industry of cement is under pressures to reduce the CO2 emissions, being responsible, today, to up to 7% of total global emissions. Following the same idea, the bauxite residue generation is growing up because the aluminum production is increasing worldwide and this residue is still discarded in the mud lakes causing considerable environmental impacts. A recent example occurred in Hungary in 2010 when the disruption of the retaining wall of mud caused the spill residue, resulting in a major environmental disaster. At least 3 cities were affected and many people infected. So, as is needed to reduce de cement consumption and to develop a large scale application to BR, the utilization of bauxite residue as cement supplementary material may be an interesting alternative to reduce the environmental impact caused by both, being this idea, the main objective of this work.
