Abstract

This research reports the effects of nutrient concentration (N and P) and carbon in the detritus and in the environment on the anaerobic decomposition of refractory organic matter from two macrophyte species (1 emerged and 1 free-floating). To assess the aims the initial nutrient concentrations will be analyzed in the detritus and in the environment. The refractory detritus will be obtained from the macrophytes leachate and decomposition chambers with the detritus and water from the reservoir where the macrophytes were sampled will be maintained in the dark and in anaerobic conditions (by nitrogen bubbling). N and P will be added to simulate different N:P ratio. In the sampling days (10, 20, 30, 60, 90 and 120) TOC concentration will be analyzed and then the samples will be filtered (0.22 µm) for TOC, NT and TP determinations. This research admits the particulate organic carbon concentration (> 0,22 µm) will correspond to microorganisms biomass. Cellulase and ²-xylanase activities will indicate the heterotrophic efficiency in different N:P conditions. A kinetic model will be adopted to explain the refractory mass decay. Non-parametric variance test will compare the mass decay and enzyme activities among the macrophytes. Linear regressions will evaluate the effect of nutrient concentrations in the mass decay and enzymes activities.
