Abstract

The goal of this study is to compare perceptual judgments of reference (gold standard) with those obtained by judges in different speech samples produced by subjects with cleft lip and palate, in relation to: (a) presence of velar plosives (target production),b ) absence of these stops (omission) and (c) presence of compensatory articulation ('glottal stop"). Three speech pathologists with experience in assessing the speech of individuals with cleft palate will provide reference (gold standard) which will be compared with those obtained by five speech pathologists judges. Speech samples will be collected for three subjects with cleft lip and palate (CLP) who produce glottal stops in / k / and / g / as well as for three subjects with age matched, producing normal speech (control). These samples consist of the following speech stimuli: (a) 6 words involving velar plosives, (b) two sentences involving these same consonants and (c) six-syllable words that combine the velar plosives in initial position of words with the vowels /i/, /a/, /u/, inserted in a carrier phrase. The subjects will be asked to repeat 5 times each speech stimuli. The samples of interest for the present study will be edited and distributed randomly. After establishment of consensual judgments (gold standard), the five judges will have the task of identifying the presence or absence of velar stops, or even the presence of AC in productions presented. After brief training, these judges will hear the samples individually using headphones and should annotate your choice. The answers will be recorded in EXCELL and the findings will be presented descriptively and analyzed by inferential statistics relevant. (AU)
