Abstract

Atherosclerosis is considered the primary cause of cardiovascular diseases which are mostly resulting from plaque rupture and thrombosis. Histological patterns of atherosclerotic plaques may be correlated with the presence of risk factors and knowledge of this connection will verify individuals prone to developing the disease. Whereas the arterial wall is an important site of nitro-oxidative modification of proteins in diseases such as atherosclerosis, nitrated proteins are quantified. This will allow for a more systemic approach in the detection of patients at risk, because nitrated proteins serve as biomarkers. Approximately 1000 atherosclerotic plaques will be organized in a database, classified according to the American Heart Association in relation to histologic and correlated with the presence of risk factors. The identification and quantification of protein nitrated be carried out using the technique of immunohistochemistry with anti-nitrotyrosine. The achievement of this identification of a large number of atherosclerotic plaques in each of the different degrees of vulnerability allow the development of new diagnostic techniques. Data will be entered and checked using the application's resources IMPS 4.1, and subsequently implemented in the SPSS program for descriptive statistical analysis of data obtained.
