Abstract

During our stay at Corpus Christi College (University of Oxford - England) we intend to research - through discussions with our supervisor at Corpus and bibliography that is unavailable in Brazil - how Seneca, at his Epistulae, uses and discusses some notions that he mentions at his 94th Epistle (praecepta, decreta, exempla, imagines, sententiae, uoces). So that we can better comprehend the didactic function that, according to some scholars, Seneca attributes to the mentioned notions, we will investigate: a) the place of these notions at Seneca's Epistles, the ancient rhetoric and Stoicism as a hole; b) the role of didactic on Seneca's Stoicism and on Stoicism as a hole. These aspects will help us to think about the place of didactic at the philosophical discourse developed at the Epistulae Morales and about what is involved in such a discourse. This will have as a result a study that considers the referred notions and the way our author discusses the relation between didactic and philosophy at the central corpus of our Master's Degree, the 94th Epistle.
