Abstract

The philosophical problem which is in question is how to interpret the Boethian claim that substances are good because they are. By this does Boethius mean that predicating Being from substances (i.e., saying 'substances are') hence it is possible to predicate conversely that they 'are good'? Would Being and Goodness then be convertible to one another, and then co-extensive? Or could it still be the case that Being implies being good, but Goodness does not imply Being? Goodness, therefore, as in Plato, would be more extensive than Being, and Being would imply Goodness, since every Being is good? These are the questions that interest us in this project. (AU)
