Elaboration of taxonomic key for third instar larvae of Calliphoridae (Diptera) of forensic importance

Abstract

The flies can provide assistance, within the forensic context, to estimate the time of death in cases of a suspicious death, or help solve cases of food contamination, and for this reason, gain importance in the forensic area. The identification of species is an essential step to obtain satisfactory results, although a process is not very simple. Specifically, in relation to immature, taxonomic keys are almost nonexistent or incomplete for many organisms that are important in several areas of knowledge, which makes identification is not reachable to the most specific level. In this study we aim to survey specific characters and diagnostics for third instar larvae of 17 species of the family Calliphoridae (Infraorder: Muscomorpha) of forensic importance recorded for all Brazilian territory. The most important character, after compilation, will be described and illustrated for the elaboration of the key. Scanning electron microscopy will also be performed to elucidate details that can not possibly be viewed through an optical microscope.(AU)
