Abstract

New advances in spatial models have thrown light on the results and the development of political competition in countries with multiparty electoral districts and high magnitude. These characteristics are present in Brazil and these models will help to expand our understanding of this process. More specifically it will help us understand why we have a bipartisan system in disputes for the federal executive with a highly fragmented party system in the legislative struggles. It will also help us better understand the role of small parties and coalitions, as well as the consequences of this institutional setting. (AU)
