Abstract

The electromechanical (E/M) impedance technique has been one of the most promising methods for the development of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems. The goal of SHM systems is to monitor a structure, preferably during their normal operating conditions, and to detect a structural damage at an initial stage, providing a high level of safety and reducing maintenance costs. Among the various possible techniques to develop SHM systems, the E/M impedance technique stands out by using low-cost and small size piezoelectric transducers, which makes the technique less invasive and allows the installation of various transducers for monitoring large areas of the structure. Although this technique has been studied for decades, some practical problems have hindered its application efficiently. The purpose of this research project is to analyze one of the most critical practical problems: the influence of temperature variation on correct detection of structural damage. During the project, the performance of various types of piezoelectric transducers will be evaluated. The results will be compared with other compensation techniques reported in the literature. The activities proposed here are related to the research project already approved by FAPESP (Proc. 2012/10825-4) titled " Piezoelectric Transducers Applied in the Structural Health Monitoring: Design and Temperature Effects Compensation".
