Abstract

Nowadays, the ethanol industry is considered one of the most important industries of the Brazilian economic scenario. However, this section generates large concentrations of waste, among which the filter cake is a solid representative residue. Thus, an alternative to the final disposal has been agricultural recycling. However, the use of filter cake in agriculture has some restrictions mainly due to the presence of trace elements of metals (ETs), non-biodegradable compounds that are persistent in the environment, and which have great potential to cause serious health problems to humans. Thus, studies has been studies showed that bioleaching is a promising alternative for the treatment of various wastes. Bioleaching is effective for removal of trace metal elements, enabling the sludge can be used in Lactuta sativa of crops without causing additional problems. Therefore, the goal of this project is to present an alternative to removal of ETs present in the filter cake produced by sugarcane mill, permitting its use in the cultivation of lettuce and thus allowing to reducing the use of chemical fertilizer and risk of contamination by ETs addition to improving the physical, chemical and biological qualities of soil in a safe manner without causing additional environmental and human damage.
