Abstract

Molecular biology has provided the opportunity to link structure and function, contributing significantly to the understanding of placental development. In mammals, chorioallantoic placenta is the main organ for maternal and fetal exchanges. It receives support from the yolk sac, which contributes significantly to hematopoiesis, immune function and hormone synthesis. In contrast to murine models, which have a hemotrichorial placenta, humans and caviomorph rodents show a hemomonochorial placenta enabling a better model for understanding the human placentation. In this way, this project aims to analyze the protein and gene expression patterns of the placental (implantation site, labyrinth region, and visceral yolk sac) and fetal tissues (primitive gut) in Galea spixii. We intend to use flow citometry and molecular biology (real-time PCR and quantitative proteomic) to understand how such molecules act during the differentiation at different stages of development. We will be focus on genes involved in the angiogenesis, metabolites transport, hormonal synthesis, cell cycle control, and immune response. The knowledge of these profiles will enable a comparative analysis of the genes and proteins involved in both chorioallantoic and vitelline placentation, contributing to the understanding of their functions during pregnancy in rodents and as a model for human placentation.
