Abstract

We propose to study a statistically complete sample of massive galaxies (sigma > 200 km/s) in the southern hemisphere; our purpose is to analyze them with methodologies developed during our PhD thesis. Massive galaxies and their supermassive black holes are important objects, as they play a special role in the structure and evolution of the universe. Many important questions, however, still remain open. The main goal of this project is to answear the following questions: 1- Are there massive galaxies without an AGN? Are there massive galaxies without a central supermassive black hole? 2- What is the frequency of circum-nuclear low ionization emission? How does the circum-nuclear emission relate to the AGN and to the stellar population and galaxy properties? What is the kinematics associated with the circum-nuclear emission? 3- What is the frequency and characteristics of the broad component in Halpha and [O I] lines and how do they relate to other parameters? 4- How do the equivalent width of the nuclear and circumnuclear Halpha components correlate?
