Abstract

Friction produces tribocharging, which in turn contributes to the normal forces between the solids electrified positively or negatively feeding back the actual friction. The literature provides some evidence on the effect of surface charges on the coefficients of friction, but the role of tribocharging is not even considered in almost all of the current literature. This stems from a lack of clear understanding about the tribocharging, which is the result of tribochemistry reactions complex-forming species of high energy events associated with partition, mass transfer and energy on microscopic and macroscopic scales. This laboratory has recently produced significant advances in understanding the mechanisms of tribocharging polymers that allow, for the first time, to propose and carry out well controlled experiments to determine the effect of static electricity on friction coefficients.This master's project has as main objective research and deepening relations between friction coefficients and the degree of electrification of surfaces, especially surfaces electrified insulating solids such as polymers and silicate glass. The results should enable further progress in understanding the complex tribological phenomena, addressing them comprehensively and elucidating their interdependencies. The new knowledge gained will enable the creation of new devices and systems for applications in materials adhesion and friction control.
