Abstract

The natural radiation is responsible for most of the radiation exposure to the population in general is subject. It is estimated that the annual average dose resulting from natural sources is approximately 2.4 mSv, and 1.3 mSv arising only from radon decay product of 238U. It is known that the ventilation rate is one of the factors that contribute strongly to the concentration of 222Rn in an environment. Generally, the evaluation of exposure to radon indoors is made in households located above ground level where the natural ventilation through doors and windows prevail. The population growth in cities drives the occupation of underground environments for various use such as restaurants, libraries, gyms and parking lots. Fact that shows the importance of monitoring the concentrations of radon in these locations also. These environments besides being in closer contact with the ground is mostly ventilation provided artificially through air conditioners. The proposed research project aims to analyze the concentration of 222Rn in environments that are above and below the ground level of a university located in the city of São Paulo. The method chosen was the uptake of the nuclear track detector coupled to a solid state diffusion chamber. From the results of the average concentration of 222Rn in the air will be evaluated internal exposure due to inhalation of radon in the air for the academic population (students) and for the employees of the educational institution.
