Abstract

The species Mazama bororo, popularly known as red brocket small, was recently described in 1996. Because of this, the basic aspects of their biology are still unknown, including its historical distribution, demographics and even questions about its taxonomic description. Mazama bororo is a species apparently restricted to the Atlantic forest, environment suffers intense human action, and possibly is the most endangered species of deer in Brazil. The use of ancient DNA, a relatively recent tool, has shown potential for use in preservation studies. Thus, this research project aims to use DNA extracted from museum specimens and feces to revise the taxonomy of the species, describing their historical range and investigate the existence of phylogeographic patterns based on old and new specimens. Therefore, museums present in samples from the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais and Bahia will be collected, and the holotype of Mazama americana jucunda, available at the museum London. This material is extracted, amplified and sequenced in its own laboratory for ancient DNA. Mitochondrial markers are used to identify the specie of each sample and, together with the use of nuclear markers will be performed phylogeographic and taxonomic study of the species. From the data obtained will be possible to know the biological reality in relation to historical distribution and taxonomic, as well as demographic questions of M. bororo information relevant for the design of conservation programs.
