Abstract

Various techniques of sewage treatment are known and used, since the most sophisticated to the most simple treatment processes. The application of anaerobic reactors, such as the UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket), came to occupy a prominent position, especially in Brazil, due to favorable environmental conditions of temperature, low cost, simplicity operation and low production of sludge. Among the anaerobic systems, there is the Compartmented Anaerobic Reactor (CAR), an unit of treatment based on the ability of different anaerobic microorganisms metabolism to degrade organic matter. This type of reactor has a simple setup, with internal divisions that seek to increase the hydraulic retention time (HRT) allowing greater contact among the biomass and the effluent. Thus, the present work aims to study the behavior of the Compartmented UASB Reactor (CUR), operating with different volumetric organic loading (VOC), varying the 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0kgCOD/m3.day in the CUR, and HRT of 12hr, 08hr and 06hr, respectively. This study aimed at assessing the performance of the CUR for the treatment of domestic sewage which will be to carry out in the municipality sewage pumping station Ilha Solteira-SP, Brazil. (AU)
