Abstract

The main point of this scientific initiation it´s to reflect the Catholic Church´s factions in Grão-Pará and their influence over the politic decisions in the province and at the court between 1826 and 1831. Don Romualdo Antonio de Seixas and Canon Batista Campos will be the main subject of study of this project. Both from Pará, members of the church and with highlighted politic careers. However, these are the only similarities. As the first became the straightest of Brazilian empire ever known, the second entered to the historiography as the most radical laissez-faire´s example. And it´s from the actions of these characters that this project intends to map the factions of the Catholic Church in Pará and their actions in the state. The chronological cutout of this scientific initiation will be from 1826 to 1831. From 1826 the representative system of Brazil´s Empire gains power with the installation of the Parliament and many other provincial organs, institutions that Don Romualdo and Batista Campos will perform. The research finishes with the August 7th 1831 coup that unseats the president of Grão-Pará province Goiania´s Viscount and arrests his legal successor Batista Campos, jointly with their political allies. The research is linked to a collective work that´s entailed to Professor Doctor André Machado´s project entitled Vassalos ou Cidadãos, obrigados ao trabalho, established by CNPq and by FAP/Unifesp. Documents from the Public File of Pará digitally available at Unifesp will be the main source of this work. (AU)
