Abstract

The storage of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) has not been thoroughly studied in veterinary medicine. Based on the need of plasma transfusion on horses, it's important to collect blood from a horse that lives in the same property to supply for the immediate need of blood transfusions, because equine blood banks are not a reality in our country yet. These transfusion may induce the occurrence of clinical and laboratory variables in patients that receives the blood. It is known that after 1 year of storage it's possible to observe changes in the composition of the human FFP. However, it is not clear whether similar changes can occur during storage of equine FFP. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the quality of fresh frozen plasma bags intended fortransfusion in horses in different periods of storage. For this purpose, 10 bags of FFP with CPDA-1 anticoagulant stored at -18 ° C to-25 ° C over seven months will be evaluated. Concentrations of albumin, factor VIII, fibrinogen and total protein and prothrombin time(PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) in a time of 24h, 1, 2, , 4, 5, 6 and 7 months after storage will be evaluated. The results will be gathered by means of parametric tests using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures followed by the Tukey Test for comparison of different points in time within the same group and the t-Student Test to compare groups. The degree of statistical significance was set to be less than 5% (p <0.05). (AU)
