Abstract

Rapid prototyping is considered the most modern technique for obtaining prototypes from digital data in three dimensions, had its origin in the late 1980s. Its principle is based in adding flat layers of material, making the manufacturing also known as manufacturing additive, or manufacturing by layer. Among the advantages of this process, we highlight the performance of the prototype from the geometrical information of the part, eliminating molds and tools, and low need for human intervention. This technique allows the production of physical prototypes directly from a 3D solid model (virtual), generated by a software "modeling". The software analyzes the created object as a solid, and the designs can be reproduced three-dimensionally by rapid prototyping machines. The software performs all operations after the file is generated, and shows the basic operations of visualization. After generating the cross-sections of the model, or layers, these will be "read" by the prototyping machine, which deposit the material on, until the piece is complete. This project complements the work that has already been developed, but will be focused on the development of medical models from computed tomographic and magnetic resonance. From this, we describe the integration of two-dimensional tomographic images with three-dimensional reconstruction, image processing and manufacturing additive, or rapid prototyping (RP). (AU)
