Abstract

As a consequence of the progress in early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the population growth and the increase of life expectancy, the number of patients surviving cancer will continue to rise in all countries. The literature registers various definitions for "survival" and "cancer survival", with a multidisciplinary approach to examine the phenomenon within its constructions, but without specifying the criteria that characterize the concepts. In order to clarify these concepts, thus contributing to the knowledge and the practice of oncologic nursing, this study has the objective to analyze the concept of survival to cancer on the basis of the hybrid conceptual model proposed by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim. This model approaches the analysis by three steps: theoretical phase (literature review), empirical phase (by means of the narrative method) and synthesis (comparison of the results of the two preceding phases). The data collected will be integrated by means of thematic analysis. The concept of survival to cancer will be characterized by attributes and consequences, on the basis of theoretical knowledge and the experiences of the patients.
