Abstract

The development of alternative energy sources able to solve the problem of efficiency in solar energy conversion, ie, increase the ratio of energy captured and available, is the key to meet the potential increased demand for energy. Mesostructures of layered double hydroxides (LDH) doped with rare earth ions could present a significant potential to meet the requirements in the organization of different molecular and mesoscopic structures used in the conversion of photons and sensitizers. In this type of material, sensitizing dyes, anionic or nanostructures can be adsorbed in the vicinity of rare earth ions allowing an increase in the efficiency of energy transfer while photochemical conversion systems may be hosted within the mesostructure. This alternative allows the improvement in the efficiency of energy capture in the application in photochemical systems, physical-and-voltaic. The use of luminescent materials "hierarchical LDH" is expected to get innovative photochemical applications comparable with the chemical revolution initiated by the introduction of large pore zeolites and other structures, mesoporous aluminosilicate.
