Abstract

Born in 1984, the portuguese writer and historian Jaime Cortesão had - like many of his contemporaries - a major role in the renovation of historical studies while critical exercise and scientific discipline in the lusitanian context. His intellectual and political trajectory tied to the demands of his time is evident throughout their historical production, that cross on diverse topics, highlighting mostly their contributions to history of the maritime discoveries, iberian maritime expansion and colonization of Brazil - having himself resided and taught for about two decades in this country. The objective of this research is therefore to understand the dimension of his work in the prism of a historiographical study - assumed as critical awareness of historical production - which aims to reconstruct part of the theoretical propositions and historical interpretations of the author in his time context and within the general framework of luso-brazilian historiography in the first half of the twentieth century, with particular emphasis on vision and epistemological project for History-knowledge sustained by Cortesão in constant and direct opposition and dialogue with his political environment and other intellectuals of his age.
