Abstract

This project aims to understand how Orientalism, with focus especially in Japan, is used in the development of contemporary Western productions, targeting the scene costumes. To analyze how this fusion between East and West occurs, a delimitation was made in one of the most influential international stage directors of the twentieth century's second half - Ariane Mnouchkine. Among the works of this French stage director, with the company Théâtre du Soleil, were selected for analysis the plays: Richard II and Henry IV part one, belonging to the spectacle Shakespeare Cycle (1981-1984) and Tambours sur la digue (2002). As the project involves an investigation of the Eastern influences in the shows mentioned above, will be held primarily a study of traditional Japanese theater: Nôgaku (Noh and Kyogen), Kabuki and Bunraku, aiming to better understand the origin of the influences in the work of this theater director, and finally, as the emphasis is the elaboration of the costumes, there will be a brief manual containing two costume's patterns of each show, thus performing a theoretical and practical study.
