Abstract Congenital hypothyroidism is defined as thyroid hormone deficiency present at birth, resulting in a generalized reduction in metabolic processes. Although the literature reports the repercussions of this condition on neuropsychomotor performance in schoolchildren, few studies have addressed repercussions in the early years of life, when timely intervention is fundamental. The aim of the proposed prospective, longitudinal, case-control study is to analyze neuropsychomotor performance in infants with congenital hypothyroidism in follow up at a neonatal screening reference center in Brazil. Thirty-six infants with congenital hypothyroidism will be evaluated at three to six months of age and reevaluated at 12 months of age. Thirty-six children without congenital hypothyroidism will serve as the control group. The groups will be analyzed with regard to neuropsychomotor performance using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III on both evaluations. Socioeconomic status will be classified on the first evaluation using the criteria established by the Brazilian Association of Research Firms (ABEP, 2010). The data will be recorded on specific forms. The findings will be statistically analyzed and presented in tables and graphs. | |
