Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the telephone transmission effects to speech signal and also to shed some light on which acoustic and prosodic parameters are affected by mobile telephone transmission (cell phones). The focus will be to determinate which are the acoustic and prosodic cues which are modified and which cues remain undifferentiated in the speaker's speech by the use of a mobile phone in comparison to direct recordings. The acoustic techniques include the evaluation of the three first formants frequencies (F1, F2 and F3), fundamental frequency (f0), spectral emphasis, baseline frequency, and interpeak duration of f0 in Brazilian Portuguese oral vowels. The corpus will consist of simultaneous recordings in two different situations: (1) recordings via mobile phone and (2) direct recordings by using a recorder and a microphone connected in a sound card, respectively. A previous study shown in this project aimed at pointing out whether there were significant changes in the subject's voice due to acoustic modifications by mobile phone transmissions. This preliminary result showed a significant change in the oral vowels' f0 mean, spectral emphasis and second and third formants frequencies. No significant variation between the first formant frequencies values for both studied speech samples was observed. (AU)
