Abstract

The objective of this research is to study in detail Rimsky-Korsakov's treatise on orchestration, aiming at elucidating the teachings of the composer's instrumentation and orchestration school.For this purpose, it shall be taken into consideration the author's original attitude towards the subject, that is, not talking at length about it in an artistic-poetic fashion, but giving a technical and objective focus, tending towards the picturesque.Firstly, the research shall focus on the bibliography studied and suggested by Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as on those of his own, aiming at contextualizing and finding information to better comprehend the treatise referred to hereinabove.Secondly, it shall be conducted the study of the orchestration treatise in order to prepare it for an imminent analytical application.Finally, it shall be performed an instrument-orchestral analysis in some excerpts that were selected from the symphonic suite named Scheherazade - one of the composer's works - thus consolidating the knowledge obtained from this research.
