Abstract

Trentepohliales is one of the most representative groups of the microflora from terrestrial environments. Although some floristic surveys have been carried out, the Trentepohliales flora still remains poorly known for the majority of the biomes of the world. This is also valid for the Brazilian biomes where species diversity is expected to be high and may represent a biodiversity hotspot for the Trentepohliales. Since they are abundant in these environments and therefore ecologically relevant, this research aims the study of the Trentepohliales in biomes from southern Brazil, in order to provide floristic, biogeographic, ecological and phylogenetic information to complete the available data to other areas of Brazil and Americas. The study will be carried out in 10 protected areas, distributed throughout the Brazilian southern region and covering four major Brazilian biomes: rainforest, Araucaria forest, seasonal forests and grasslands. Samplings of algal growth will occur once in each protected area by random collection within the largest area possible. For each sample will be presented information of environmental data (humidity, temperature, pH and substrate type) and geographical position. Samples will be transfered to the laboratory for morphological evaluation (habit, mass characteristics, size and form of the vegetative cells and reproductive structures) and molecular study using SSU, rbcL and ITS markers. Part of this project will be developed in the Phycolab of the University of Alabama, under supervision and collaboration of Dr. Juan C. López Bautista.
