Abstract

Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems are of great importance to Engineering and are present in nature as well as in buildings and machines made by Man. Aeroelastic phenomena, such as flutter, dynamic of floating bodies and biomechanical simulation involving blood flow are examples, just to say a few, of problems to which the formulation proposed may be applied. Additionally, because many problems of Engineering interest involves large structural displacements and fluid convection, the FSI is by nature strongly nonlinear. This project proposes, initially, a stabilized Finite Element Method formulation to solve tridimensional fluid flow problems governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The structural problem, in turn, is based on nonlinear dynamic formulation able to simulate complex structural motion with large displacements and finite strains during long periods of time. Finally, the FSI problem is achieved by coupling both fluid and structural problem through an immersed boundary method in alternative to classical Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) approaches. To solve the coupled system of equations, it is used a fully implicit staggered scheme, which has the advantage of allowing the implementation of black box computer codes already developed by this author and the research group headed by the supervisor of this project.
