Abstract

The goal of this project is to check the daily and seasonal variability of air pollution and its relation to urban climate and type of urbanization in the cities of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. It is expected that the urban environment quality is strongly related to the convective exchanges between the surface, buildings and the urban atmosphere. It will be developed an analytical study of the concentration of some pollutants in different cities of the State of São Paulo in comparison to micrometeorological observations conducted on different surfaces in the western region of the State. It will be assessed the concentrations of major air pollutants (PM10, SO2 and NO2) in the cities of the State of São Paulo, characterized by different types of urbanization. Data analysis will include comparisons between pollutant concentrations and turbulent fluxes that have been observed in cities in the western region for similar time periods and types of surface coverage, allowing an estimate of the surface boundary layer dynamics and their relation to the seasonal and daily patterns of the concentration of pollutants. For concentrations of PM10, SO2 and NO2 data will be used data from the telemetric network of the Company of Environmental Technology and Sanitation of São Paulo (CETESB). For the observations of turbulent fluxes will be used data from the Research Project named Observational study of thermal comfort in cities of medium Paranapanema (FAPESP process. 11/08520-8). In the last step of the work the data concentration and turbulent observations will be analyzed and related to the elements of the urban landscape, searching for evidence of environmental quality conditions associated with different types of urbanization in the studied cities
