Abstract

This study will analyze if there is association between cleft lip and palate and congenital heart disease. This relationship is hypothesized because the facial prominences, namely the frontal, mandibular, medial nasal, lateral nasal and maxillary prominences differentiate around the fourth week of intrauterine life, and failure in merging between them may cause cleft lip, palate, or both. The embryonic process of face formation occurs concomitantly with the differentiation of heart cells, more specifically during the first and second months of intrauterine life. Therefore, by analysis of records of 2,000 patients with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate from the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies (HRAC), this study aims to verify if there is relationship between the presence of cleft lip and palate and the systemic heart disease. Thereafter, these data will be plotted and, by quantitative analysis, it will be assessed whether heart diseases occur more frequently in some specific type of cleft.
