Abstract

Anaemia is a public health problem that affects more than 750 million children in the world. In Brazil, iron deficiency has been considered the main cause of anemia in infants. Given the fact that the current public health strategy in Brazil using ferrous sulphate to control anaemia in this age group has shown poor adherence and effectiveness, in 2012 the Brazilian's Ministry of Health and United Nations Children's Fund supported a multicenter study to assess the effectiveness of home fortification of complementary feeding in primary health care. Thus, the aim of this study is to assess the adherence and acceptability of home fortification with vitamins and minerals in complementary feeding of children less than one year. Methods: This is a multicenter pragmatic trial in Basic Health Units (BHUs). For the present study, we will analyze data from follow-up questions applied to children's caregivers assigned to the intervention group (n~600) at three and six months after the distribution of home fortification in BHUs. Conclusion: It is expected to identify factors that influence the adherence and acceptability of home fortification, in order to guide future actions and public policies for reducing the prevalence of childhood anaemia.
