Abstract

Proposes to conduct study to describe the process of social-cognitive institutionalization of the Knowledge Organization (KO)domain. To understand the dynamics of the process of scientific institutionalization seeks input on conceptions of Whitley (1974) on the subject. Seeks to apply the theory of the author to understand the development of the foundational concepts of the KO domain in a diachronic perspective. Identifies a lack of historical studies in the field. As a consequence, there is a theoretical weakness in this field, also evidenced by Hjørland (2003) and Guimarães (2008). Intends to contribute to the consolidation of a more consistent epistemological status to discipline through study of the evolution of concepts and their relationships over time. Does the methodological trajectory of future study in the following stages of work: to describe diachronically concrete evidence of cognitive milestones related to KO guided the theoretical framework; to raise scientific works presented in the ISKO; to examine the content of the items raised; to seek conceptual convergences and their relationships, comparing theoretical results with empirical benchmark; to build conceptual maps from the diachronic perspective of social-cognitive structures of the KO domain.
