Abstract

Several theories have been developed and applied in metallic systems in order to find the best alloy stoichiometries with high glass forming ability; however there is no universal theory to predict the glass forming ability in metallic systems. A new criterion has been applied to predict and select the glass forming ability of metallic alloys. This criterion correlates critical cooling rate for glass formation with topological instability of stable crystalline structures as well as the average work function difference and the average electron density difference among the constituent elements of the alloy. In the present work, amorphous structures of alloys predicted by such a selection criterion will be studied by atom probe tomography. Experimental data will be compared to theoretical cluster packing models. Crystalline phases that compete with the desired amorphous structure also will be studied by experimental data provided by transmission electron microscopy. (AU)
