Abstract This research focuses on the implementation of the prison system in the Brazilian Empire while the 1830 Criminal Code of the Empire was in force. We seek to understand which strategies were planned and executed by the government in relation to the prison system, and observe how other policies undertaken - law of leasing services, recruitment, establishing colonies and military prisons, among others - also influenced conceptions of punishment and social order, which has important consequences for the institutions of incarceration in general. For that, we use as primary sources the annals of the Câmara de Deputados and the reports of the Justice ministers. As prisons suffer sanctions in the provinces (as stipulated by the Additional Act of 1834), and socioeconomic and political realities could considerably alter the reality prison, we decided to examine more closely, comparing with politics played in the Corte, three provinces: a center-southern (São Paulo), another northern (Pernambuco) and, finally, a border area (Mato Grosso). For this part of the research, we will use the annals of the Assembleias Provinciais, the reports of the presidents of these provinces and the correspondences of police chiefs. (AU) | |
