Abstract One of the most exciting fields in modern condensed matter physics is the prediction and observation of new states of matter which have an insulating bulk with protected conducting states on its edge or surface. In this project, we propose to systematically investigate the evolution of a three-dimensional (3D) topological Kondo insulator candidate, SmB6, from the dilute regime in the series Sm1xRxB6 (R = Sr, Yb). The ex- perimental study will initially consist in the growth of the single crystals from aluminum flux and their macroscopic characterization by transport, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Subsequently, the combined doping with paramagnetic probes (such as Gd3+) will allow the microscopic study by electron spin resonance measurements and the understanding of the role of magnetic impurities in topological insulators.
