Abstract

The term "eugenics" was coined by Francis Galton in 1883 to appoint a science aimed at improving the biological heritage of humanity. Therefore, should offer theories and methods toward physical and mental perfectibility. Renato Kehl (1889-1974), brazilian physician and pharmacist, was one of the main exponents of Brazilian eugenics, taking for himself the task of publicist and organizer of eugenic societies that were formed in the early decades of the twentieth century. Some ideas about the notion of progress versus decay contained in his works in favor of the eugenics movement - mostly published between 1917 and 1940-are treated in this project. They were part of the campaign eugenic Brazilian debates about the sterilization of unwanted marriage and immigration restrictions. In this context, the eugenics movement was presented by its advocates as a solution against the inevitable and alarming decay that affected the nation. (AU)
