Abstract

This study aims at developing the concept on nurses' moral distress in end-of-life situations lived in ICUs. The Hybrid Model of Concept Development shall be applied in three steps: Theory, Field and Final Analysis. In the theoretical step, publications on medical and nursing areas, that studied or focused on the nurses' moral distress, shall be studied. The Field phase shall be carried out by means of semi-structured interviews where the experience of 12 nurses that work in ICUs will be accessed. The data gathered in the Field phase shall be analyzed by using the results of the theoretical step as a theoretical axis and the Fundamental Theory as a methodological reference. In the Final Analysis, the results from Theoretical and Field steps shall be compared, analyzed and integrated. The analysis and development of a concept refer to the relevance of a proposal, regarding the importance in practice. When it comes to this study, the relevance is upon the need for highlighting the nurse's professional competence in end-of-life situations and reducing psychological distress and professional weariness.
