Effect of different methods of disinfection on the bond strength between artificial denture teeth and acrylic resin denture base

Abstract

Bond failure between artificial denture teeth and acrylic resin denture base is a common problem and affect the quality of life of partial and total denture users. Disinfection procedures (chemical and mechanical) impair the mechanical properties of acrylic resin and denture teeth. However, the effect of such disinfectants on the denture teeth/acrylic resin bond strength remains unclear in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this study will to evaluate the effect of different methods of disinfection (chemical, mechanical and combined) on the shear bond strength between artificial denture teeth and acrylic resin denture base. The null hypothesis to be tested is that the denture teeth/acrylic resin bond strength will not be affect by the disinfection methods. Three different brands of denture teeth (Trilux, Biolux and Vipi Dent Plus) and one microwave-polymerized acrylic resin (Vipi Wave) will be used. The specimens from groups H and Cl will be immersed in 1% sodium hypochlorite and 4% chlorhexidine gluconate during 7 days , respectively. In group Br the specimens will be brushed with tooth brushing machine, using a 200-g vertical force during 20,000 cycles. In groups Br-H and Br-Cl, specimens will be brushed then subject to chemical disinfection through 1% sodium hypochlorite and 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, respectively. In the control groups 1 (Co1) and 2 (Co2), the specimens will be stored in distillated water for 50 ± 2 hours and 7 days, respectively. The shear bond test will be performed using an universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min applied on the denture teeth/acrylic resin interface. The bond failure modes will be assessed through stereomicroscope, classified and quantified as adhesive, cohesive or mixed failures. Representative specimens will be evaluated in a scanning electron microscope. Data will be tabulated and multiple comparison tests among the groups will be applied (±=.05). The number of specimens per group will be determined by the power analysis.
