Abstract

As institutions that preserve knowledge of humanity, artistic products and documentation, there are libraries, art museums and archives, respectively. The principle of each of these institutions is the preservation and/or accumulation of what might be called, in general, a collection. It is believed that the preservation spaces of contemporary works of art, commonly museums, but also other types of institutions such as galleries and cultural centres, find difficulties in establishing a symbolic place to keep the works within the institution, as well as in their records. Either their preservation is held by form or format, or by function. How can we define what is a document of archives, libraries, museums or documentation centres when works of art use materials and forms distinct from each other? The aim of this question is to observe and discuss theories involving the different perspectives of Information Science with regard to object/document/information of contemporary works of art, in order to reflect the care and organization of the object information document of contemporary art. Therefore, this research defines contemporary art as document information. The study is qualitative and will build on exploratory research focused on literature that deals with thematic proposals, as well as observations and analyses both direct and indirect in institutions that address the research objectives. Finally, this research is not intended to determine what is the right or wrong way to handle the materials of contemporary art, but rather seeks to reflect and propose methods that can accommodate the needs of art institutions for the care and organization in an effective way.
