Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen versus trichloroacetic acid in the treatment of penile warts by Human Papillomavirus (HPV): a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

The condyloma acuminata are genital warts caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) being the most common cause of sexually transmitted diseases in young. The treatment is difficult due to the difficulty of monitoring the patients and recurrence by several methods. Its incidence has been increasing in recent years, associated with the AIDS. This project proposes a comparison of rapid methods of treatment to check the effectiveness of both. We will conducted a randomized, controlled, treatment of penile warts with cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen or 80% trichloroacetic acid in male patients at the clinic of Sexually Transmitted Diseases of the Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu, UNESP, in a period of 12 months. The primary dependent variable will be the numerical count of genital warts lesions before treatment and after four weeks. Also will be examined the variables: age, immunosuppression, smoking, topography (glans, shaft, foreskin) and education level. The numerical variation of the lesions will be assessed by generalized linear mixed model for counts (Poisson or negative binomial) and adjusted for covariates. The sample dimension will be based on a pre-test with the first 50 patients, with an expected gap of more than 30% of the rate of warts reduction between the treatments. The results will be analyzed by SPSS 20 software, being considered significant at p <0.05.
