Abstract

The importance of understanding brittle structures, such as joints and faults, has increased since the recent discovery of large hydrocarbon reservoirs in carbonate rocks from the Brazilian continental margin, generically known as "pre-salt" since they occur below a thick layer of evaporites. The stratigraphic architecture is a primary controlling factor on fracture development as it dictates the distribution and variability of sedimentary facies which influences the style, intensity, and location of fractures. The relation between fractures and stratigraphy, namely mechanical stratigraphy, has been demonstrated by correlating bed thickness with fracture intensity. The aim of the present study is to characterize the fracture distribution in carbonate rocks from the Iratí Formation, near Rio Claro and Piracicaba, São Paulo State, taking into account the stratigraphic architecture and the bed thickness. Besides standard field techniques, a 3D laser scanner will be used to collect the spatial distribution of the attitude of the fracture planes. The results obtained by the present work may be useful as an analog for water or hydrocarbon carbonate reservoirs.(AU)
