Abstract

Objectives: to determine whether plasma and peritoneal fluid concentrations of the acute-phase protein (APP) activin A change in calves with or without umbilical hernia before and after herniorrhaphy; to assess whether this variable in calves with umbilical hernias was altered, compared with findings in clinically normal calves; establish reference intervals for this acute-phase protein in peritoneal fluid and plasma in calves with congenital umbilical hernias before and after herniorrhaphy, and determine whether these acute-phase proteins could be used as an inflammatory biomarker of abdominal cavity inflammatory response before and after herniorrhaphy. Animals: 20 Holstein calves with (n=10) or without umbilical hernia (n=10). Procedures: Plasma and peritoneal fluid samples were frozen at -80ºC from all 20 calves will be used for the determination of activin-A concentrations on days 0 (before surgery), 1, 3, 5, 7, and 15. Data from the 2 groups will be compared. Clinical relevance: Reference intervals for this acute-phase protein will be established for each group; the potential compartment to assess its presence will be determined, and whether this APP is a potential inflammatory biomarker of abdominal cavity inflammatory response before and after herniorrhaphy will be determined in calves with and without umbilical hernias.
