Abstract

The fifth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirms once again that in the present state of knowledge it is clear that climate changes have occurred in different parts of the planet. Brazil largely contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). Among these gases is nitrous oxide (N2O), which weight in Brazil's greenhouse gas balance is increasing. Understanding mechanisms underlying the emission of this gas and looking for alternative mitigation is crucial. Nitrification and denitrification are the mechanisms that allow the production of N2O. In tropical grassland soils the sources of N2O are not well understood. Additionally, the amendment of biochar to the soil has been suggested as a promising N2O mitigation strategy, but could alter nitrification and denitrification in different ways. The objective of this research is to elucidate the contribution of nitrification and denitrification to N2O fluxes in tropical and temperate soils under various moisture conditions and with the addition of biochar. This research will use 15N stable isotope techniques to distinguish between nitrification and denitrification sources of N2O and will be carried out under supervision of Dr. Johan Six at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in Zurich, Switzerland.
