Abstract

This research project intends to explore the inherent emblematic values of the landscape as a collective manifestation in urban neighborhood, based on the case study of the public spaces in Bom Retiro, a traditional district in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. One of its many neighborhoods, Bom Retiro was chosen as object of study because of its multifarious culture and the historical existence of different immigrants communities. Its urban life is characterized by cultural diversity, as the inheritance of the immigrants who had lived there and had contributed to its formation, manifested through the peculiar features of its scenery. The research aims to detect multicultural expressions in Bom Retiro's landscape, describing the way how the immigrants had participated in the creation and transformation of their neighborhood's public spaces as well as how they have had and are appropriating them throughout.
