Abstract

Earthquake activity in Montes Claros, MG, started around 1995. In May 19, 2012, the largest event (magnitude 4.0 mb) caused some damage to poor houses and great concern to the population. A 9-station local network was then installed by the universities of São Paulo and Brasília. In this project, the student will use waveform cross-correlation techniques to better constraint the P and S arrivals, improving the relative hypocentral determination. The student will also improve his skills in linux programming, seismological methods, and least-squares inversion for hypocentral determination. Estimates of the fault plane orientation and the focal mechanism will also be carried out.
