Abstract

This research aims to make a comparison between the works "Life of Pi - a novel" (2001), by the Canadian author Yann Martel and "Max and the cats" translated by Eloah F. Giacomelli's from the novel Max e os Felinos (1981) by the Brazilian author Moacyr Scliar. The main objective of this project is to seek evidences which suggest the presence of the novel "Max and the Cats" in Martel's best-seller work, winner of the Man Booker Prize , literary award conferred by England, in 2002. Therefore, based on the initial bibliography, "Teoria do Romance" by Donaldo Schüler (São Paulo: Ática, 1989) and "Literatura Comparada: Textos Fundadores", organized by Eduardo F. Coutinho and Tania Franco Carvalhal (Rio de Janeiro: Rocco, 1994), among others, we will point out and analyze similarities and differences between the two novels, and especially how these elements have been developed to build a cultural industry foreign work that gained international recognition and several refractions, originated from the "leitmotiv" of a hermetic Brazilian work.
