Evaluation of cardiorespiratory changes of the use of perioperative antibiotics intravenously in cats (Felis catus, L. 1766)

Abstract

Nosocomial infections represent a major cause of mortality and morbidity in surgical patients. The antibiotic prophylaxis during the perioperative period is widely used in surgical procedures to prevent possible secondary infections. This strategy should take into account a number of factors intrinsic to the patient and the system involved, the procedure to be performed and the drug to be used, since its use can lead to side effects, directly interfering in the patient's outcome. This project aimed to evaluate the cardiorespiratory and hemodynamic secondary changes after an intravenous perioperative administration of antibiotics in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Fifty healthy cats will be used, equally divided into 5 groups. The control group (G1) will receive saline intravenously and the other treatment groups will be divided according to the tested antibiotics: cefazolin (G2), ceftriaxone (G3), enrofloxacin (G4) and ampicillin (G5). Will be evaluated systolic, mean and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, MBP and DBP), heart rate (HR), oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (SpO2), carbon dioxide end-tidal (ETCO2), respiratory rate (RR) and rhythm heart (EKG).
